The little hamlet of San Fabiano has undergone numerous architectural interventions over the centuries that still define its appearance today, making it a truly unique structure. Medieval buildings are interspersed with Renaissance columns and vaults, or typical farmhouses and granaries from the Sienese sharecropping period, while from time to time, more recent interventions, some dating back to the post-war period, can also be seen.

The Story

The Castle of San Fabiano, just 13 km from Siena in the Crete Senesi, is a 12th-century gem. Once a signaling tower on the Via Francigena, it became a fortified farm in the 15th century. Restored in 1950 by the Fiorentini Family, it’s now a welcoming Tuscan retreat managed by its current owners.

The Story

Located in the enchanting Crete Senesi region between Chianti and Val d'Orcia, the hamlet features a 12th-century tower, the manor villa, polyfunctional buildings, and an 867 A.D. church dedicated to Saint Fabian, Pope and Martyr.

The main tower was part of a signaling system along the Via Francigena, connecting Radicofani, the first outpost of the Republic of Siena, with the Torre del Mangia in Siena's city center. The charming small church provided pilgrims with rest for both body and spirit.

At the end of the 15th century, the castle was transformed into a fortified farm by the noble Forteguerri family, who owned it until 1916. Afterward, the property changed hands and was fragmented for 30 years. In 1950, Count Giuseppe Fiorentini, a Roman entrepreneur, purchased it and spent a decade restoring the buildings, including 25 farmhouses, reuniting the agricultural estate into over 750 hectares for use as a summer residence and hunting reserve. Thanks to his efforts, the Castle of San Fabiano became a thriving agricultural center.

Today, the San Fabiano estate is a wildlife repopulation area. The current owners, Architect Andrea Fiorentini and his wife Beatrice, have chosen to live here permanently with their three sons. They transformed it into an elegant, yet simple, residence rich in charm, welcoming guests from around the world eager to discover Tuscany and experience the true Italian lifestyle.

Over the centuries, the Castle of San Fabiano, like the rest of the village, underwent numerous architectural modifications that still define its unique appearance today. In the village, medieval buildings alternate with Renaissance columns and arches, typical farmhouses, and granaries from the Sharecropping Era. Here and there, you can spot more recent additions, some dating back to the post-World War II period.
